About AWAGHA
Allied Women & Adolescent Girls living with HIV/AIDS Initiatives Uganda Limited
Empowering women and adolescent girls for better health and sustainable development.
Our History
AWAGHA’s vision emerged way back in 2019 during the covid-19 Period by a few heads of people who used to seek services from various health facilities from within the district of Bugiri and the surrounding districts of Bugiri, Busia, Namayingo, Tororo, Bugweri, Namutumba and Iganga but were staying in Bugiri district yet it had become a time when there was lock down and could NOT easily move to their various destinations where they used to access ART services. But as well these were people who used to have stigma being seen accessing ART services from nearby facilities where their communities know them.
And because of that they come tracing up the person who was by then Heading the Bugiri district HIV/AIDS Program at Bugiri Hospital (Isabirye Geofrey kyakulaga) to share their challenges with him and to see how best they could be helped including other persons who were silently dying in their households because of HIV and COVID-19 but had no body to reach out to them for help by then
This same officer was also leading covid-19 Home-based care services at the Quarantine Management center and in resolution they thought of coming up with a common voice to raise out issues that could benefit the bigger population of people living with HIV/AIDS in form of an Alliance to addresses demands of women and adolescent girls living with HIV/aids.
In resolution he took initiatives to start on it with the team as the founder member and currently the executive Director for AWAGHA initiatives Uganda limited, supporting in further efforts to even have men engagements to join the group since he had all the potential to support its genesis as a community based organization, with an elected chairperson Byekwaso Joy by then plus other members who were picked on and decided to have a legal organization. it’s now registered at the District, Regional and National level under Uganda Aids Commission and at National level under Uganda Registration Services Bureau with a clear vision, mission and goal as described in its 3 thematic operational areas. it's registered at the district, at the ministry This is how Allied Women and Adolescents Girls living with HIV/AIDS initiatives Uganda limited (AWAGHA) emerged to date. These women were basically struggling to access drugs and take care of their families amidst the quarantine operations with no work and money to support them yet legal organization that were working on Health approaches with clear identification were allowed to move to community for their operations.
The organization has currently come with multiple community support Projects including a PNFP Medical Facility called Allied General Medical PNFP-clinic, for both static and Community Based Health Care Programs that supports reaching out to Hard to Reach Households and individuals for health services delivery.
It also encouraged its peers on social- economic efforts and started on several economic empowerment programs for the youth, women and particularly adolescent’s girls, across all sectors (Horticulture, Poultry, Agroforestry, Small scale Income Generating Projects at household levels, Tailoring etc.)
We are currently working closely with the district stakeholders and reporting to district and ministry of health through the DHIS2 for health programs including other structures for collaborative efforts with CSO's like HEROES FOR GENDER TRANSFORMATIVE ACTION, CORDAID, MJAP, and PSI INTERNATIONAL & DKT INTERNATIONAL on responses to address SRHS/SGBV Services within the district communities.
