Project Description

AWAGHA’s Agroforestry Project promotes tree planting and integrated farming systems among women and adolescent girls living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. The project aims to contribute to climate preservation while improving community livelihoods. By combining trees with crops and livestock, participants enhance soil fertility, conserve water, reduce erosion, and create sustainable income sources through fruit trees, timber, and firewood production.
This initiative supports Uganda’s broader environmental goals by restoring degraded land, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and building resilience against the effects of climate change. It also strengthens household economic capacity, as beneficiaries can earn income from agroforestry products while contributing to environmental protection.

Objectives

Promote agroforestry as a sustainable livelihood and climate adaptation strategy. Contribute to environmental conservation and climate change mitigation. Enhance household income through the sale of tree products (fruit, timber, firewood). Improve soil fertility and agricultural productivity through integrated farming. Build the capacity of women and adolescent girls in tree planting and environmental management.

Achievements

Trained AWAGHA members in agroforestry practices and environmental stewardship. Planted 2000 trees in community and household gardens. Increased awareness about climate change and sustainable land use. Improved soil health and productivity in participating households. Strengthened the link between environmental conservation and women’s economic empowerment.
