Summary

Awagha Initiatives Uganda held a meeting with Key Populations (KPs) from various hotspots in Bugiri Municipality to strengthen efforts toward the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). During the meeting, condoms were distributed, and participants shared their ongoing contributions to HIV prevention, including consistent condom use, routine HIV testing, peer-to-peer awareness, the use of PEP and PrEP, safer sex practices, and adherence to ART among those living with HIV.

Awagha Initiatives Uganda organized a meeting with Key Populations (KPs) drawn from various hotspots within Bugiri Municipality as part of efforts to accelerate the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the district. The engagement brought together members of the KP community to discuss their role in reducing new infections and strengthening community-led prevention strategies. During the meeting, Awagha Initiatives Uganda distributed condoms to participants as a key prevention measure and emphasized the importance of their consistent and correct use. The Key Populations present highlighted the efforts they are already undertaking to contribute to HIV prevention within their communities. These efforts include consistent condom use, routine HIV testing and counseling, peer-to-peer information sharing on HIV prevention, the use of Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), promotion of safer sex practices, and strict adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) among those living with HIV. The discussion also provided a platform for participants to share experiences from the field and identify ways of strengthening collaboration between the community and Awagha Initiatives Uganda. Through peer education and community outreach, members of the Key Populations continue to play a critical role in disseminating accurate information about HIV prevention and encouraging others in their networks to access testing and treatment services. While addressing the participants, the Program Director of Awagha Initiatives Uganda commended the Key Populations for their commitment and active participation in HIV prevention initiatives within Bugiri Municipality. The director called upon them to intensify social and behavioral change efforts within their communities to further reduce risky behaviors that contribute to the spread of HIV and STIs. Participants were also encouraged to seek friendly and confidential Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) services at the Awagha clinic whenever the need arises. Emphasis was placed on the availability of supportive health services that are accessible, non-judgmental, and responsive to the unique needs of Key Populations. In addition, the Program Director advised participants to explore alternative livelihood initiatives that could help improve their economic stability and reduce vulnerability to risky survival practices. Such initiatives, including small-scale income-generating activities, were highlighted as important steps toward empowering members of the Key Populations and supporting their long-term well-being. The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from both Awagha Initiatives Uganda and the Key Populations to continue working together to strengthen HIV/STI prevention efforts, promote safer health practices, and improve access to essential health and support services across Bugiri Municipality.
